French Camp - San Joaquin County, CA
French-Canadian trappers working for Hudson's Bay Company used to meet in this area along the Oregon-California trail to camp with their families every year, thus coining the name French Camp. French Camp was also known as Castoria, the Latin word for "beaver" being "castor", reflecting its central role in the California Fur Rush.
Today, Scott Brooks - Head Coach of the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder calls this town of 4,000 his home. French Camp is the location of the U.S. Army Sharpe Depot and the GSA Western Distribution Center, and is the oldest settlement in San Joaquin County.
